- Buying Your First Deck

Your first Tarot deck is something that is going to help you being your journey into the cards. Therefore, it is extremely important to make sure that you purchase the right deck.

Step into a shop and you will find it full of beautifully packaged ‘Tarot Sets’ with a deck and a book as well! Wow! You think that it’s simple enough!

Well not quite. In my experience, many would-be Tarot readers end up buying a deck which hinders, rather than helps their growth in this field. I fell pray to this as well and ended up with a deck that I could not relate to, and left me feeling more confused than before.

So how do you go about choosing your first Tarot deck? The best answer is: by looking carefully. You are going to spend an amount of money, so be careful with it. Ask the shop to show you an opened deck. Most shops will have one. Examine the cards well.

The most important thing to look out for is to see if the Minor Arcana cards have pictures on them. Then see if you can relate to these pictures.

There are decks available which are based on several themes. Pick a theme that you are familiar with. For example, don’t buy a deck based on Greek Mythology if you have no idea what it is. If you buy the deck, you will have to first spend time learning the pertinent facts from and about Greek Mythology. And then, you can begin exploring the deck.

Do you feel good when you hold the deck in your hands? Most of us don’t pay attention to what our feelings are telling us. Pay attention. What does your heart say? What do you feel?

Now, here is my personal recommendation. Go for the Rider-Waite-Smith deck or the Universal Waite deck. It is the best deck to begin your learning with. Not only are the pictures simple enough to understand, but they are also contemporary enough for you to relate the cards to events from your everyday life.
